Association of Medical Physicists in Russia

Association of Medical Physicists in Russia (AMPR) is an all-Russian union of non-profit organizations. It was founded in 1993 to unite professionals working in the field of fundamental and applied medical physics, engineering, high medical radiation technologies, education and publishing. Its headquarter is situated on the clinical base of the N.N.Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center (RCRC), which is the main and the biggest cancer center on the territory of Russia and the former USSR.

The AMPR counts more than 400 specialists from various scientific and medical research centers, hospitals, universities, companies and other institutions. AMPR is a member of the European Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (EFOMP), International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) and European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO). AMPR is working on the educational projects realized for the Russian speaking specialists from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region in close collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), American Association of Physics in Medicine (AAPM), State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM (ROSATOM), Russian Oncology Association, Russian Association of Radiologists (RAR), Russian Nuclear Medicine Society.

In 1995 the AMPR founded the Russian journal "Meditsinskaya Fizika" which is an official journal of the Association of Medical Physicists in Russia (AMPR). 64 issues have been published since then.

In 2004 the AMPR founded a non-profit scientific and professional organization – the Institute of Medical Physics and Engineering (IMPE). It was established for efficient scientific and educational activities in the field of research and educational projects. One of the main scientific trends is the elaboration and implementation of the strategy of physicotechnical development of medical radiology (medical nuclear physics technologies).

The IMPE unites more than 50 leading scientists of different scientific trends: radiation therapy physics, nuclear medicine, magnet therapy, radiation safety, clinical dosimetry and radiometry, quality assurance, medical information systems, etc.

The AMPR & IMPE have fulfilled 60 scientific projects on the development and implementation of domestic medical radiation devices and technologies for radiation therapy and nuclear medicine in clinical practice, including clinical dosimeter with diamond detector, 3D treatment planning system “Amphora” for external beam radiation therapy and treatment planning system “Contact” for intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy. The specialists have performed expertise of technical and technological status of 60 oncology clinics.

In 2011 the AMPR established the Radiation Oncology Society (ROS) which unites radiation oncology specialists from the CIS region. Today the ROS counts about 900 members from the CIS countries. Its mission is to improve patient care through clinical practice, education and research, to organize the continuing professional development of the radiation oncology team; to consolidate all specialists involved in radiation oncology modernization and development in the CIS region, to cooperate with the international and national organizations (IOMP, EFOMP, AAPM, IAEA, ESTRO). In 2011 the AMPR founded the journal "Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine" and published 7 issues since then.

The AMPR has been involved in the training of radiation oncology team consisting of medical physicists, radiation oncologists and radiation therapy technologists since 1993. About 1000 specialists have been trained since then.

In 2012 the AMPR organized the International Training Center on medical physics, radiation oncology and nuclear medicine on the base of N.N.Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center. The International Training Center of the Association of Medical Physicists in Russia (AMPR) provides postgraduate education in medical physics for the Russian speaking specialists under the 2012-2015 IAEA Technical Cooperation Projects RER/6/025 and RER6/030 – Building Capacity for Medical Physics in Radiation Oncology for the Commonwealth of Independent States. The AMPR Center has received a positive assessment from the IAEA expert mission and medical physics audit.

The focus is made on the medical physics training for medical physicists, healthcare managers and university teachers. The distinctive features are the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for the specialists from the CIS region, hospital-based hands-on training and teaching in Russian.

The AMPR has been a Russian coordinator under the IAEA/WHO TLD POSTAL DOSE QUALITY AUDIT for many years. Annually it takes care of the mailing and distribution of the TLD capsules to radiotherapy hospitals in Russia.

The AMPR is the active organizer of many Eurasian and National congresses, conferences, symposia and schools on medical physics and radiation oncology.
